Compare hospitals, not just your nearest one
Under the NHS Right to Choose, patients in England can generally select any suitable NHS provider for their referral, not only their local hospital. Waiting times for the same operation can differ by many weeks between trusts a similar distance away, and the e-Referral Service (which most GPs use) shows current figures, often updated weekly.
Ask your GP directly
At the point of referral, ask your GP to show you the waiting-time options rather than defaulting to whichever hospital is pre-selected. This single conversation is often the biggest lever you have.
Act quickly once referred
Your official wait is measured from when your chosen hospital receives the referral, so book your outpatient appointment as soon as it's offered and respond promptly to any further contact.
Know the cancellation rules
If your operation is cancelled by the hospital for non-clinical reasons after you've been admitted, the NHS is required to offer you another date within 28 days, or fund your treatment at an alternative provider if that isn't possible.
