Itchy Bottom (Pruritus Ani): Common Causes and Relief
An itchy bottom — known medically as pruritus ani — is common, often persistent, and usually treatable once the cause is addressed.
Common causes
Frequently there's no single cause, but contributors include:
- moisture, sweating or incomplete cleaning,
- over-cleaning or scented products that irritate the skin,
- skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis,
- piles or skin tags that make hygiene harder,
- occasionally diet, threadworms, or other medical conditions.
What brings relief
- Gentle hygiene: clean with water, pat dry, avoid scented wipes and vigorous wiping.
- Avoid scratching, which worsens the irritation.
- Keep the area dry, using cotton underwear.
- Treat any underlying cause, such as piles or a skin condition.
When to see a specialist
Most cases settle with simple measures. See a doctor if it persists despite these steps, if there's bleeding, a lump, or a change in bowel habit, or if a skin condition needs specific treatment — partly to relieve the itch and partly to exclude other causes.
